Ravens safety Matt Elam will need bicep surgery
Baltimore Ravens safety Matt Elam will undergo season-ending bicep surgery. He sustained the injury during Saturday's training camp practice.
Elam was projected as the backup strong safety behind Will Hill, but he is now likely to be placed on Injured Reserved to end his season. Elam will be entering the final year of his rookie contract during the 2016 season.
We projected Elam to finish the season with an ineffective 15 tackles prior to the injury. However, the depth he provided at safety would have been important to the Ravens' secondary. The Ravens ranked 18th in our schedule-adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points metric last season.
