Dwayne Washington to see expanded role for Lions

Detroit Lions rookie running back Dwayne Washington's role will expand following Ameer Abdullah's foot injury, head coach Jim Caldwell confirmed.

What It Means:

"He was productive obviously on the carries that he had and I think he’s coming along," Caldwell said. "I think without question he’s certainly capable of giving us some unique production in his way because he’s a little different type of back." Washington has six carries for 32 yards and a touchdown through the first two games of his career. Theo Riddick should start for the Lions in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers, with Washington siphoning goal-line opportunities and likely seeing around 8-12 touches.

During Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Washington led the Detroit backfield with 0.86 Rushing Net Expected Points on four carries, according to numberFire Live.
