Matt Jones sees just seven carries for Redskins Monday night

Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones collected 24 yards on seven carries and caught his only target for nine yards Monday in Washington's Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What It Means:

If Monday night meant anything, the Redskins' backfield is going to be determined by game-flow, as Chris Thompson out-snapped Jones in a game that Washington was trailing from the jump. It was also Thompson, not Jones, who got the call at the goal line for a one-yard plunge. Aside from a 12-yard burst in the third quarter, Jones did nothing to show he's deserving of a larger role in the offense. On a positive note, he protected the football and appeared to be healthy. He'll be a RB3 in Week 2 versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Among the 64 running backs to see at least two carries in Week 1, Jones ranks 38th in Rushing Net Expected Points per attempt. Thompson checks in at 23rd.
