Tavon Austin signs four-year, $42 million extension with Rams

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin signed a four-year, $42 million extension through 2021.

What It Means:

The deal includes a whopping $30 million guaranteed, the fourth-most among wide receivers, which is a rich sum for a 5'8" gadget player the Rams have desperately miscast as a top-tier receiver since the 2013 NFL Draft. Austin eclipsed both 400 yards rushing and receiving in 2015, but his kind of skillset simply isn't worthy of this kind of deal. All that being said, Austin is a useful real-life player who has low-end FLEX appeal in fantasy. He's just not who the Rams are paying him to be.

Among the 86 wide receivers with at least 50 targets in 2015, Austin's 0.30 Reception Net Expected Points per target was only better than the Chicago Bears' Eddie Royal, and was actually worse than the infamous season Davante Adams of the Green Bay Packers had.
