Tom Savage is the Texans' backup quarterback
Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage is the team’s second-stringer, head coach Bill O'Brien confirmed.
Savage was behind veteran Brandon Weeden to start the offseason, but has since passed him on the depth chart. "I think he's number two right now," O'Brien said. "That's not to say Weeden hasn't done a good job. Tom has really improved." Savage threw two touchdowns in Houston’s preseason opener, and is finally showing the upside he came into the league with. His ceiling is still just that he'll develop into a solid backup.
Savage had 20 drop backs in his rookie 2014 campaign, accruing a meager -2.52 Passing Net Expected Points on those downs. He missed all of 2015 with an injury.
