New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith can be the Jets’ starter, head coach Todd Bowles thinks.
"I think Geno can be a good starter, but he’s got to prove it in training camp like everybody else," Bowles said. "He’s been in the system a year. We’ll see what he does." It’s not a resounding endorsement, but the Jets have thrown support behind Smith all offseason. Contract talks with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick remain at a standstill in contract talks.
Among the 37 quarterbacks to record at least 200 dropbacks last season, Fitzpatrick ranked 12th with 0.14 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt. Smith posted a 0.01 Passing NEP per dropback in 2014, his last season as a starter.
