Schefter: 49ers' Trey Lance has "significant" ankle injury, season likely over

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has likely suffered a season-ending ankle injury Sunday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

What It Means:

Lance went down in the second quarter after two defenders fell on his leg. The second-year quarterback immediately was carted off with an air-cast on his leg, and now, it seems as though the worst-case scenario has occurred. While more test still need to be conducted, Schefter is reporting that the ankle injury will likely require season-ending surgery. Embattled veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who was the subject of many trade rumors throughout the offseason, will be the incumbent starter under center once again for the 49ers.

Before exiting, Lance had completed 2-of-3 passes for 30 yards. He also had 3 carries for 13 yards.
