Panthers have plenty of cap space to re-sign Kawann Short

The Carolina Panthers could sign defensive tackle Kawann Short to a contract extension with the money they saved by rescinding cornerback Josh Norman's franchise tag, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe believes.

What It Means:

Volin is just speculating, but it seems like a no-brainer for the Panthers now that they have over $31 million available in cap space. While it's still a mystery why Carolina let Norman walk, it's possible the Panthers didn't feel they had enough cap room to accommodate both Norman and Short with so much money already committed to Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly. Short was a second-team All-Pro last season and should remain in Carolina for the foreseeable future.

The Panthers ranked 11th in the league in 2015 in Adjusted Defensive Rushing Net Expected Points per play.
