Browns officially use franchise tag on David Njoku
The Cleveland Browns have applied the franchise tag to tight end David Njoku.
The move guarantees that Njoku will be signed through the 2022 NFL season, but does not preclude the team from continuing to work with the former first round pick on a more long-term deal. Njoku expressed an interest in playing for another team before the 2020 season (when the team signed Austin Hooper in free agency and draft Harrison Bryant), but he seemed to mend his relationship with the team since that point.
Njoku flashed the elite receiving upside that made him such a highly-valued prospect in Week 6 of the 2021 season, converting 7 catches into 149 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, he was unable to eclipse a 75% snap share in all but one game this past season, and seems unlikely to garner an every-down role with this iteration of the Browns' offense.
