Cam Newton to remain Panthers' starting quarterback after Week 13 bye

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule told the media Monday that Cam Newton will remain the team's starting quarterback in Week 14 despite his benching during the team's Week 12 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

What It Means:

Cam's Week 12 performance was dreadful enough to get him benched in the middle of the third quarter, but it wouldn't be fair to lay all of the blame at the former MVP's feet; relief quarterback P.J. Walker also absorbed 4 sacks in just over a quarter of play and tossed another interception himself. The Panthers' offensive line is in shambles, and prevented the team from mustering any sort of offense in Week 12.

While Cam did spend the majority of his career with the Panthers, he's playing under an entirely new regime and play-callers, so it's fair to expect some growing pains as Newton adjusts to a brand new system in the middle of the season. He'll likely be a low-level streaming option in single-quarterback leagues in Week 14 due to his rushing potential and goal line opportunities.
