Patriots possibly open to quarterback platoon
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick did not rule out using a two-quarterback strategy in the regular season.
"Here’s what I will always say: I will always say I am going to do what is best for the team," Belichick replied when asked if he would consider using both Cam Newton and Mac Jones in a regular season game. "I am going to do whatever I can to help the team win." The quarterback platoon would crush both quarterback's individual fantasy values, but Jones offers more upside for the Patriots' pass-catchers. Newton, who is not allowed back into the Patriots facility until Thursday due to a "misunderstanding" about a COVID-19 test, is considered the frontrunner to be New England's Week 1 starter.
Jones is the only quarterback this preseason to earn a passing grade higher than 90.0 from Pro Football Focus. Per PlayerProfiler, Jones posted a 96.1 college QBR that ranked in the 100th percentile and his 11.2 yards per attempt ranked in the 97th percentile.
