49ers' coach Kyle Shanahan would be "very surprised" if rookie Trey Lance starts Week 1

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would be "very surprised" if rookie quarterback Trey Lance started in Week 1 for the 2021 season.

What It Means:

Shanahan specified that current starter Jimmy Garoppolo has done enough in his 49ers tenure to stave off incumbent rookie Lance, but beat reporters on the scene have depicted a different portrait of the team's current quarterback situation. Lance has unironically drawn comparisons to a "wolf" in comparison to Garoppolo and has earned the respect of the team's first-squad receivers.

Lance has the rushing upside to be a QB1 in fantasy football, but has barely played football since his redshirt freshman year with North Dakota State. Our models currently project Lance to finish as the QB30 this season, but he could become a weekly must-start as soon as he takes the starting job due to his rushing upside.
