Bengals believe C.J. Uzomah has 50-catch potential
Cincinnati Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah could record 50 receptions this season, according to offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.
Callahan believes the Bengals could have five players catch at least 50 passes this season, with Uzomah filling one of those spots. The 2015 fifth-round pick drew six targets in Week 1 and then five more in Week 2 before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in the first half. Uzomah finished with eight catches over those six quarters of play, which would have easily put him on pace for a 50-plus catch campaign. Uzomah could provide value at the tail-end of fantasy drafts, though Drew Sample is a potential threat to siphon away playing time.
Uzomah is currently the TE41 and Sample is the TE44 in numberFire's preseason fantasy rankings. Our models project Uzomah for 35.2 targets, 23.6 receptions, 231.1 yards, and 1.9 touchdowns. Sample is projected for 27.5 targets, 19.1 receptions, 184.9 yards, and 1.5 touchdowns. Uzomah added nearly twice as many Reception Net Expected Points per target (0.72) as Sample (0.37) last season.
