Eric Weddle

Panthers expected to pursue Eric Weddle

The Carolina Panthers are interested in San Diego Chargers impending free agent safety Eric Weddle, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

What It Means:

Head coach Ron Rivera and defensive backs coach Steve Wilks both worked with Weddle during their time in San Diego. Weddle has been to the playoffs once in his last six seasons and would welcome a chance to play for a Super Bowl contender. Weddle can play both strong and free safety, and would be an upgrade on the declining Roman Harper. The Panthers don't expect to spend big money this offseason, so it remains to be seen if Weddle is a realistic target or merely a pipe dream.

Weddle played through groin pain his entire 2015 season. He finished with 77 tackles and six pass breakups across 13 starts. Despite his injuries, the Chargers still finished 21st in Adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points per play.
