Panthers release Charles Johnson, save $11 million
The Carolina Panthers released defensive end Charles Johnson.
The move saves $11 million but leaves $4.02 million in dead money. With Josh Norman's looming extension, the Panthers couldn't afford to keep Johnson. Carolina will move forward with Kony Ealy as their top pass rusher. The 29-year-old Johnson joins Mario Williams at the top of the defensive end market.
Johnson was a part of Carolina's -35.60 Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points in 2015, which ranked second in the league. He played only nine games in 2015, totaling 12 tackles and 1.0 sack.
