Colts' Philip Rivers announces retirement after 17 seasons

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers announced his retirement after 17 NFL seasons.

What It Means:

Rivers spent 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers and then a final season with the Colts. "It's just time," Rivers said. "It's just right." The 39-year-old helped guide the Colts to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth this season while throwing for over 4,000 yards for the eighth straight season and 12th time in his career. The eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback retires after 240 consecutive starts, the second-longest streak in NFL history behind Brett Favre (297). The Colts will now be in the quarterback market for a second straight offseason.

Rivers finishes his career ranked fifth all-time in both passing yards (63,440) and touchdown passes (421). He averaged 16.1 FanDuel points per game in 2020 and added the ninth-most Passing Net Expected Points per dropback among 44 quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks through the Wild Card round.
