Eagles fire head coach Doug Pederson

The Philadelphia Eagles have parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson.

What It Means:

Pederson's five-year tenure as the Eagles' head coach has come to an end after one of the most baffling seasons in recent memory. He helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory in his second season as the team's head coach, but subsequently helped the team spiral to the bottom of the bottom of the NFC East in 2020. Pederson's Super Bowl victory virtually assures that he should land another job relatively soon, and the Eagles' head coaching position immediately becomes one of the more interesting potential landing spots for a new coach.

Pederson's 2020 season was more or less defined by his persistence in starting quarterback Carson Wentz for 13 turnover-heavy games despite having 2020 NFL Draft second-round pick Jalen Hurts waiting in the wings, but his leadership came under heavy scrutiny following his decision to remove Hurts in the team's meaningless Week 17 game for third-stringer Nate Sudfeld. The Eagles' 2020 was a depressing and disappointing season, but hopefully a new coaching staff can revitalize the team next year.
