Eric Weddle

Chargers will not franchise tag Eric Weddle

General manager Tom Telesco said the San Diego Chargers will not use the franchise tag this offseason.

What It Means:

The Bolts haven't franchised anyone since 2011 when they tagged wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Their only real candidate this year is safety Eric Weddle, though he's been pretty vocal in his desire to leave San Diego, going as far as to say he'll never speak with anyone in the organization again. Weddle would earn $12.2 million under the franchise tag, but that's not going to happen.

Weddle played through groin pain his entire 2015 season. He finished with 77 tackles and six pass breakups across 13 starts. Despite his injuries, the Chargers still finished 21st in Adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points per play.
