New England's Jerod Mayo calls it quits after eight seasons
New England Patriots inside linebacker Jerod Mayo announced his retirement after eight seasons in the NFL.
Mayo decided the physical toll was too much for him after ending the year on injured reserve for the third straight season. The Patriots declined his $11.4 million option for 2016, and Mayo wasn't interested in playing elsewhere.
Mayo earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2008 and was a first-team All-Pro in 2010. He logged 47 tackles in his last season while backing up Dont'a Hightower and Jonathan Freeny. New England finished 2015 ranked 12th in Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play.
