Panthers 'hopeful' Christian McCaffrey (ankle) plays Thursday
Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is "hopeful" running back Christian McCaffrey (ankle) will be available for Thursday's Week 8 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
"He looks like he’s moving around great," Rhule said of McCaffrey. "Just we’ll let the medical people and him determine how much he can do, or when he can play in a game. It won't be a minute too early. We'll be smart." Barring a setback, things seem to be pointing toward McCaffrey suiting up on Thursday for the first time since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 2. Mike Davis has averaged 19.8 touches per game in five games as the Panthers' lead back.
McCaffrey ranks 14th and Davis ranks 57th in Rushing Net Expected Points per carry this season. The Falcons have allowed the second-most receptions to running backs this season but have the No. 4 rush defense in numberFire's advanced team rankings.
