Texans suggest Duke Johnson could be more involved

Houston Texans running back Duke Johnson could see more work going forward, per interim head coach Romeo Crennel.

What It Means:

Johnson was limited to a season-low 4 touches in Crennel's debut this past Sunday and his snap share fell from the previous game. "We know what Duke brings to the table, we like what Duke brings to the table," Crennel claimed. "Next week, Duke might be the guy who shows up more in the receiving game and running game as well." Since entering the NFL in 2015, Johnson is averaging the sixth-most yards per catch (9.2) among all running backs with at least 100 receptions in that span. The problem is his new teammate and 2015 draft class alum, David Johnson, leads that same running back group with 10.6 yards per catch for his career. David is also averaging more yards per touch (5.1) so far this season than Duke (4.6), so it would be surprising to see him sacrifice significant usage without suffering an injury. Duke is averaging nearly half as many targets per game (2.0) as last year's career-low (3.9). The Texans will face the Tennessee Titans in Week 6.

Per Pro Football Focus, David Johnson has run the second-most routes (135) among all running backs this season. He's averaging 27.0 routes per game while Duke is only averaging 10.0. Duke is also on pace to set a new career-low in yards per target (5.3) for a second straight season.
