49ers send tight end Jordan Reed (knee) to short-term IR

The San Francisco 49ers have place tight end Jordan Reed (knee) on the short-term injured reserve.

What It Means:

Reed got banged up in the team's Week 3 rout of the New York Giants, but testing revealed that the oft-injured tight end is dealing with an MCL sprain that could take up to 6-8 weeks to heal. With Reed absent, the team could look to expand teammate Ross Dwelley's role in the offense.

Reed was the focal point of the team's offense in Week 2, catching 7 of 8 targets for 50 yards and 2 touchdowns against the New York Jets, and was heavily involved with 6 targets in Week 3 before going down. Dwelley filled in admirably in Reed's absence, catching all of his 4 targets for 49 yards.
