C.J. Spiller

Saints planning to keep C.J. Spiller for 2016

New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller is expected to stay on the Saints' roster, at least into training camp, ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett said.

What It Means:

The Saints would actually lose salary cap space by releasing Spiller unless they designated him a post-June 1 cut, which would affect their salary cap down the road. Triplett writes there's a "good chance" Spiller will get "another summer to regain his spark" after he fell behind due to preseason knee surgery in 2015. Spiller has always been an exciting talent, but he's also been a fantasy disappointment far more often than not. He'll turn 29 in August.

Spiller was supposed to be a PPR dynamo in his first season in New Orleans, but Mark Ingram (and Tim Hightower) severely outplayed him. Among backs with at least 40 targets, Spiller ended the year ranked 27th in Reception Net Expected Points per target.
