The New York Jets placed running back Le'Veon Bell (hamstring) on injured reserve.
Bell will be eligible to return in Week 5. The Jets signed Kalen Ballage to the active roster in a corresponding move. Frank Gore and Josh Adams will likely split most of the backfield work with Bell sidelined. Lamical Perine (ankle) could also potentially contribute in Week 2 versus the San Francisco 49ers if healthy. Ballage may wind up with a role out of necessity. Bell rushed 6 times for 14 yards and caught 2 passes for 32 yards in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills before departing with a hamstring injury.
Bell was the Jets' least efficient runner in Week 1, according to numberFire's metrics. He averaged -0.23 Rushing Net Expected Points per play, compared to 0.00 for Gore and 1.22 for Adams. The 49ers were tagged for the second-most rushing yards (180) in Week 1 and check out as the third-worst defense against the run in our advanced rankings through the first week of games.
