49ers' Richie James lands on reserve/COVID-19 list
The San Francisco 49ers have placed wide receiver and return man Richie James on their reserve-injured list.
Players are going through their initial rounds of testing and screening to determine which players can safely report to camp. Hopefully James is doing well and will be able to report before too long. Considered to be on the roster bubble following the team's use of a first-round pick on Brandon Aiyuk in this year's draft, the broken foot injury Deebo Samuels suffered earlier this offseason does leave the door open for James to make the final cut again this season.
James joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent two seasons ago and has since amassed an impressive 1,634 all purpose yards (primarily on kick and punt returns). He has struggled to find a significant role on the offensive side of the ball, but should be afforded a chance to impress the coaching staff in training camp with all of Trent Taylor, Jalen Hurd, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk dealing with injuries over the past year.
