Lions aiming to keep Calvin Johnson with extension

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson returning and signing a Larry Fitzgerald-esque extension is the "goal" of the team, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

What It Means:

That's after they convince him to keep playing. Johnson has yet to publicly announce his intentions, but multiple reports suggest he's serious about retiring. If he changes his mind, the Lions apparently won't be paying him his $15.95 million salary, which comes with a monumental $24 million cap number. Fitzgerald agreed to a two-year, $22 million deal under similar circumstances last offseason.

Despite a rough start to the year, Johnson ended 2015 with the 10th most Reception Net Expected Points (NEP) among the 54 wide receivers with at least 75 targets. His 48.41 Target NEP ranked 16th among the same group.
