Matt Breida to likely split carries in Miami's backfield

Miami Dolphins running back Matt Breida will likely share carries with Jordan Howard, writes Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post.

What It Means:

Breida is expected to be the go-to option out of the backfield on passing downs while Howard handles early-down and goal-line work. However, Schad notes that Patrick Laird could siphon third-down reps away from Breida if he makes the roster. Breida was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for the 153rd overall pick during the 2020 NFL Draft. Ankle problems essentially made Breida a non-factor over the second half of last season, but the former undrafted free agent has averaged 5.0 yards per carry and 8.4 yards per catch through 43 career games. He turned 25 in February.

numberFire's models expect Howard to out-touch Breida 173.2 to 159.8 this season, with Howard attempting more carries and Breida hauling in more catches. Breida is projected for 571.4 rushing yards, 258.2 receiving yards, 33.4 catches (45.8 targets), and 4.6 touchdowns. He's the RB39 in our preseason fantasy rankings.
