Dolphins sign quarterback Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins have signed fifth-overall pick Tua Tagovailoa to a four-year, $30.28 million contract with a fifth-year option.

What It Means:

The deal includes a $19.6 million signing bonus and is fully guaranteed. Whether or not Tua will be the Dolphins' starting quarterback come Week 1 remains to be seen. Ryan Fitzpatrick led the team to multiple surprising wins in the 2019, and Tua's health has been the only major red flag on his collegiate resume.

Were it not for concerns over his health, Tua could have pushed new Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow for the honors of being the first overall pick of the draft. Tua was an elite college prospect, averaging 12.7 adjusted yards per attempt in his three seasons at Alabama while throwing 87 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions in the SEC. His PFF grade of 90.3 in 2019 ranked 10th-best in the nation and was his second consecutive season with a grade over 90. If he can stay healthy, he should be the Dolphins starter for a long time.
