Panthers reportedly pick up XFL's P.J. Walker
The Carolina Panthers are signing quarterback P.J. Walker, formerly of the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL, reports Dianna Russini of ESPN.
Walker was widely considered the frontrunner for XFL MVP honors before the COVID-19 outbreak. He joins a Carolina quarterback room that currently consists of Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton (foot), Will Grier (foot), and Kyle Allen. Newton is expected to traded or released, so Walker will be able to compete for backup duties behind Bridgewater. Walker, who previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad from 2017 to 2019, played under new Panthers head coach Matt Rhule during all four of his seasons at Temple University. Russini notes that the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals also had "very strong interest" in the XFL standout. Walker turned 25 in February.
Walker led the XFL with 15 touchdowns and 1,338 passing yards while leading the Roughnecks to a 5-0 record. He only threw 4 interceptions and added 99 yards with a score on the ground.
