Cam Newton permitted by Panthers to pursue trade

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been granted permission to seek a trade.

What It Means:

Newton and his representatives met with Panthers general manager Marty Hurney to discuss the plan. "We have been working with Cam and his agent to find the best fit for him moving forward and he will always be a Carolina Panther in our hearts," Hurney stated. Newton was limited to just two games last season after suffering a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot during the preseason that required surgery. He's also undergone multiple surgeries on his throwing shoulder since 2016. Newton will turn 31 in May. The Panthers "are showing very strong interest in quarterback Teddy Bridgewater," according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.

Newton averaged 8.8 FanDuel points with 286.0 passing yards and no touchdowns in two appearances last season. He actually took away a career-low .04 expected points per play, ranking 39th out of 46 quarterbacks with 90-plus dropbacks last season. Newton's 5.9 adjusted yards per pass attempt also marked a new career-low.
