Cam Newton (foot) reportedly staying under center for Carolina
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is considered the team's starter moving forward, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Newton is still months away from being ready to play in games, which complicates a potential trade, and the Panthers would prefer not to release the former league MVP, so it makes sense for him to remain QB1. At least for now. New Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday that he was "unbelievably excited" to work with Newton.
Newton completed 56.2 percent of his passes for 572 yards (6.4 per attempt) with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception in two games last season before going down. He also rushed for negative-2 yards on 5 carries.
