Malcolm Butler

Patriots may wait to extend Malcolm Butler

New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, who is entering the final year of his contract, may not receive an extension until after the 2016 season.

What It Means:

Butler will be just a restricted free agent next offseason, which means the Patriots can take advantage of his $600,000 cap hit in 2016 without much fear of losing him in free agency. Even if they are forced to put a first-round tender on Butler after next season, the Patriots will have cheap control of the talented corner for the next two years.

Butler, the Super Bowl hero, turned into a real weapon this past season. He had 15 passes defended to go with two picks and 67 tackles. The Patriots ended the regular season ranked 15th in Adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points per play.
