Cam Newton (foot) placed on Panthers injured reserve

The Carolina Panthers placed quarterback Cam Newton (foot) on injured reserve.

What It Means:

“For the past seven weeks, Cam has diligently followed a program of rest and rehab and still is experiencing pain in his foot,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “He saw two foot specialists last week who agreed that he should continue that path prescribed by the team’s medical staff, and that it likely will take significant time for the injury to fully heal." Newton hasn't played since Week 2. He will be eligible to return in the playoffs, though it doesn't sound like there's any guarantee Newton will be cleared by then. Kyle Allen will continue managing games as the Panthers' starting quarterback. They take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 10.

Newton completed 56.2 percent of his passes for 572 yards (6.4 per attempt) with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception in two games before going down. He also recorded negative-2 yards on 5 carries.
