Chargers lose Eric Weddle, Jason Verrett to injury
San Diego Chargers defensive backs Eric Weddle and Jason Verrett were forced from San Diego's Week 16 game against the Oakland Raiders with injuries and did not return.
Verrett injured his hamstring while Weddle left with a groin ailment. The injuries hollowed out a secondary that had been significantly slowing Oakland quarterback Derek Carr, who was able to eventually lead the Raiders to a come-from-behind win. Headed for free agency, it's possible the injury means Weddle has played his final snap as a Charger.
San Diego has struggled mightily on defense this season, and this isn't going to help. The Chargers rank 29th in Adjusted Defensive Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per play and 26th in Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per drop back. This bodes well for the offense of the Denver Broncos, who will see San Diego in Week 17.
