Mike Bercovici, Quarterback

Of course, the highlight position of the NFL’s marquee event is the quarterback. 15 passers were selected during the NFL Draft, and Arizona State’s Mike Bercovici was not one of them. Bercovici has a smaller stature for an NFL passer, standing 6’2”, weighing around 205 pounds, and he has a habit of forcing the ball into tight windows with a kind of confidence that can border on silly recklessness.

That said, though, despite his size, he has incredible arm strength and massive velocity on his throws. He needs to develop his touch passes more, but the velocity on his zip passes can fit into those small windows and he knows it. He has a tight spiral on his throws and good footwork, which are details that many quarterbacks miss. In addition, he’s fairly athletic, having run a 6.88 second 3 Cone and 4.31 second 20 Yard Shuttle at his pro day. In Bercovici’s final year at Arizona State, he had a 59.9 percent Completion Rate, 5.65 percent Touchdown Rate, 1.69 percent Interception Rate, and 7.3 Yards per Attempt.

Signed by the San Diego Chargers, Bercovici figures to slot in as a practice squad quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Kellen Clemens. He’s currently behind 2014 undrafted rookie Bryn Renner as well, though both Clemens and Renner present little competition to Bercovici if his talent is real. Though the Chargers will likely draft a long-term replacement to Rivers in the coming years, if Bercovici proves himself, he could be given a shot at the starting gig in time.
