With Aaron Rodgers injured for a large portion of the 2013 season, someone had to step up and claim the title of third-best passer according to numberFire's data. And the man to do it was none other than Philip Rivers.
Coming off of the worst season in his career as a starter in 2012, Rivers rebounded in a major way, returning to the dominant form he showed for years after taking over for Drew Brees in San Diego. He posted the second-best Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) total of his career, good enough for third in the NFL behind Brees and Peyton Manning.
This year, Rivers hopes to carry on that momentum and move the ball for a team lacking in true playmakers at receiver. Keenan Allen had a nice rookie season, but the general lack of talent out wide may be a big reason why the Chargers were one of the 10 run-heaviest teams last year.
The Chargers passing offense will be good this year, and the only question is how often they'll throw. Rivers is one of the safer bets this year, and with his low price in most leagues, he's worth waiting on while you stock up on other positions.
