Sammy Watkins Is Breaking Out -- Again

Sammy Watkins has had a strange start to his young career, but it certainly seems like he's found a home in Kansas City. The Chiefs signed Watkins to a lucrative $48 million contract this March, and that move is starting to pay off.

It helps that the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball, but Watkins has been performing quite well at an individual level. He's drawn the third-most targets on the team and has been very efficient with those targets. His 0.96 Receiver Air Yard Conversion (RACR) mark -- a measure of a wide receiver's efficiency at turning air yards into real yards -- leads all of the Chiefs' receivers through Week 8, and we know there's some stiff competition on that offense.

In Week 8, Watkins had a breakout game for his third team in as many years. Even before Tyreek Hill exited the game in the fourth quarter with a groin strain, Watkins was dominating the game. He finished with an impressive stat line of 9 targets, 8 receptions, 107 yards and 2 touchdowns, with most of that production coming before the final quarter.

Hill's injury should put even more work on Watkins' plate. Hill has handled 34% of the Chiefs' air yards this season, meaning there's a ton of opportunity up for grabs while he recovers. Watkins is the next man up and has proved in the past that he's a capable fantasy producer. Going forward, if Hill misses any time, Watkins should be a solid weekly option for your fantasy teams.
