Cleveland Browns' Passing Offense

That whole introduction was a long-winded excuse for pumping the Cleveland Browns even though they're destined to be chalky this week. Just let me have my fun.

And fun is exactly the right word to use when describing Baker Mayfield. He was unleashed from the bottle last week and led the Browns to their first win since December 24th, 2016. Now, he goes on the road to take on the Oakland Raiders in what appears to be a delectable matchup we should want to target. Getcha popcorn ready.

Mayfield's performance against the New York Jets was impressive in a vacuum. But it looks even better when you consider the opponent.

The Jets aren't viewed as being an elite pass defense, but with Jamal Adams and Trumaine Johnson in the secondary, the Jets actually lead the league in Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per play through three games. Here's how Mayfield's performance compares to other quarterbacks to face the Jets. "Passing NEP/P" is short for Passing NEP per drop back, which shows the expected points added on a per-drop back basis while deducting for things such as sacks, interceptions, and incompletions. Success Rate is the percentage of drop backs that increase the team's expected points for the drive.

QBs vs. JetsAttemptsYardsYards per AttemptPassing NEP/PSuccess Rate
Matthew Stafford462866.22-8.6945.65%
Ryan Tannehill231687.30-2.8444.44%
Tyrod Taylor14191.36-12.5911.76%
Baker Mayfield232018.749.2950.00%

That list of quarterbacks won't blow you away. But Ryan Tannehill actually ranks 8th in Passing NEP per drop back of 31 quarterbacks with at least 50 drop backs even when you include his struggles against the Jets. Mayfield was able to succeed against what seems to be a stout defense. He's not going to face as stiff of a test this week.

The Raiders clearly miss Khalil Mack. Through three games, they've logged just three sacks, and while the criticism of the Mack trade is a bit tired by this point, it has had a major impact on their defense. They enter this week ranked 28th against the pass, according to numberFire's metrics.

The aforementioned Tannehill? His numbers got a big boost by facing this team. On just 23 attempts, Tannehill went for 289 yards and 3 touchdowns last week, showing that you can generate a ceiling without heavy volume. With Mayfield being priced at just $6,900 on FanDuel, there's a lot to love both about him and about this matchup.

Once you lock in Mayfield, you next have to decide who belongs in a stack with him. The obvious -- and likely best -- answer is Jarvis Landry.

Landry's workload has been simply massive in his first year with the Browns, and it's a different role than he had with the Miami Dolphins.

Landry's 35.6% target market share is in line with what he did in Miami. But he also has 34.5% of the team's deep targets (at least 16 yards downfield), a drastic deviation from his time in South Beach. Landry finished the 2017 season with 16 total deep targets, but he's up to 10 already through 3 games. That gives him extra upside and makes Landry a bargain at $7,000.

But there's another player who is even cheaper and looks mighty intriguing when you dig a bit deeper. That's Antonio Callaway.

Because Mayfield had 23 attempts on Thursday, we've got a decent idea of where he wants to go with the ball. Landry was clearly the top outlet, but Callaway got some love, as well.

In the two games without Josh Gordon, Callaway has 21.5% of the team's targets, including 5 targets at least 16 yards downfield. That's not a bad role, and yet Callaway is still minimum price on FanDuel at $4,500.

You could give some thought to David Njoku, as well, as he's just $5,200 and has played at least 74% of the snaps in all 3 games. Based on where Mayfield went against the Jets, though, our top two assets to target should likely be Landry and Callaway.
