Pittsburgh Steelers' Passing Offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers not named James Conner looked like butt in Week 1. Ben Roethlisberger threw three picks, and Antonio Brown turned 16 targets into just 93 yards as the Steelers wound up tying the Cleveland Browns.

Normally, you'd think this would be an obvious situation where the public would be willing to overlook those Week 1 blues. But a couple of factors may put a lid on that enthusiasm.

First, we saw the Steelers struggle out of the gate last year, too, as Roethlisberger had 10 touchdowns to 9 interceptions through the first 8 games. He now has a mild elbow injury to further those concerns.

Second, if people do decide to invest in the Steelers, it would most likely be via Conner. There's still no sign of Le'Veon Bell, and Conner's just $7,000 on FanDuel. Given the role he played last week, that's not as high as it should be.

Those are all valid points, and we shouldn't completely overlook them. But it's hard not to slobber over the matchup the Steelers have on tap this week.

They'll welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to town fresh off a 10-point win on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill have optimism bubbling over this roster, and that's absolutely justified.

However, questions around the Chiefs' secondary continue to linger.

Philip Rivers thrashed the Chiefs for 424 yards and 3 touchdowns in the opener, keeping the Chargers in the game despite miscues elsewhere. His 0.37 Passing NEP per drop back (which deducts expected points lost for both interceptions and sacks) was sixth-most among 34 quarterbacks with at least 15 drop backs in Week 1.

And it could have been so much better.

With no Marcus Peters in the Chiefs' secondary, we should be expecting them to struggle mightily in 2018. With star safety Eric Berry still not practicing, the Steelers' offense could go bananas here.

To make things even better, it's hard to fret too much about that tie for the Steelers last week. The team historically performs worse on the road, they were playing in rain and heavy winds, and the Browns' defense has a good amount of talent. There were signs that they would let down in that spot, and that's exactly what happened. This team will absolutely be popular this week -- there's no way around that -- but last week should at least keep ownership from getting too out of control.

Roethlisberger is $7,600 on FanDuel, $100 more than Mahomes, who figures to be (and deserves to be) superbly popular. We'll want exposure to both sides of this matchup, and that's not a bad price to pay for Roethlisberger.

We should also feel pretty comfortable with Brown despite the lack of production last week. He finished with 16 targets, 4 of which were at least 16 yards down field and 2 of which were in the red zone. According to the RotoViz Game Splits App, Brown averages 13.86 targets for 132.07 yards and 0.86 touchdowns per game when he has played without Bell since the start of the 2015 season, adding more juice to his appeal at $8,900.

If you're looking to spend down a bit, then it's totally fine to take a run at JuJu Smith-Schuster, as well. He managed to get eight targets last week with two of those being deep targets. We know he has big-play ability, so it's wise to get some exposure to Smith-Schuster when rolling out multiple rosters with Roethlisberger.
