Which Backs Will Find Homes?

Fantasy players must certainly be thrilled that three running backs went in Round 1 last night. Saquon Barkley, Rashaad Penny, and Sony Michel all found homes on the first night of the draft, cementing their status as big-time names to know in our drafts this year.

That said, there are many more running backs still on the board as we head into Round 2, some that most analysts expected to go higher than Penny or Michel. In addition, teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – who ranked seventh-worst by schedule-adjusted Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per play in 2017 – could use quality additions to the backfield.

Former Georgia Bulldogs back Nick Chubb may be falling due to a gruesome knee injury in his sophomore year, but he came back to average 5.54 yards per attempt with a 5.15 percent touchdown rate over his last two years of school post-injury. He’s been connected to the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers in recent weeks, so he shouldn’t get out of the second round without a hat and jersey.

LSU's Derrius Guice is another surprise faller, after many projected him to go to the Philadelphia Eagles with the 32nd pick in the draft. The issues with Guice don’t seem to be related to his ability to play the game either, as he averaged 6.28 yards per attempt with a 6.43 percent touchdown rate over his last two years while dealing with nagging injuries. The reason he might be plummeting are perceived off-field issues, perhaps his blowing the whistle on inappropriate questions asked of him during the NFL Combine. Guice was a near-consensus first round prospect in the run-up, so he should go early on Friday night as well.

Other names to watch include Southern Cal's Ronald Jones II from the and Auburn's Kerryon Johnson.
