History may look back on the San Francisco 49ers trade for former New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as on of the most impactful trades in NFL history when all is said and done. After being dealt at the deadline for just a second-round pick, he took the helm of his new franchise in Week 13 -- following their 1-10 start -- and proceeded to win his first four games.
I repeat: a team that was 1-10 changed quarterbacks and has been undefeated ever since. That includes two impressive wins over the playoff-bound Jacksonville Jaguars and a likely playoff-bound Tennessee Titans.
In Week 16, Garoppolo efficiently dismantled the league's best defense, scoring 44 points against the Jaguars using receivers such as fullback Kyle Juszczyk and rookie tight end George Kittle. He put up a respectable Performance Score of 87 by scoring 3 total touchdowns and passing for 242 yards. That was good for a Passing NEP of 14.30.
On a team with extreme limitations at the skill positions, Garoppolo was poised and effective, forcing Blake Bortles to play from behind. The young signal caller continues to defy expectations, and the 49ers look set at that most important position for the next decade and beyond.
