Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith will not pick up his player option and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Smith owns the rights to a player option for $5.4 million for the 2016-'17 season. With the salary cap expected to rise significantly, it's pretty much a no-brainer for Smith, even if he wants to remain with the Cavaliers.
Smith finished the regular season ranked 62nd with a 1.8 nERD. He averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 boards and 1.7 assists per game while posting a 53.5 Effective Field Goal Percentage, his best clip since the 2008-'09 campaign.
