JJ O'Brien agrees to a deal with the Jazz
JJ O'Brein has reportedly reserved himself a roster spot for the Jazz preseason training camp after signing a 1-year partially guaranteed $525,000 contract with Utah.
What It Means:
O'Brien was known for his defense at San Diego State, leading the team in Defensive Win Shares last season (2.8) but has also expanded his offensive range this summer shooting 54.2% from downtown over six games.
It's still a long shot O'Brien will make the final Jazz roster. However, it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up spending some time with Utah's D-League affiliate, the Idaho Stampede, before cracking the Association. His defensive ability would be welcome: Utah finished the season as the 14th-best defensive team, according to numberFire's Defensive Efficiency metric, and was trending upward in the latter portion of the season.
