3 NBA DraftKings Studs to Target on 10/23/19
While building a daily fantasy basketball lineup, it's important to make sure you find the right studs to anchor your team. As the most expensive players in your lineup, they need big-time production to match their high price tag.
You may find it hard to fit some of these guys in while staying under the salary cap, but you can check out our projections to find value players for your rosters. Let's take a look at the top high-priced DraftKings plays of the day.
Joel Embiid, C, Philadelphia 76ers
DraftKings Price: $9,800
For starters, the Philadelphia 76ers are 5.5-point favorites at home in a game with a 212.5 over/under, per FanDuel Sportsbook. That tells us that they have an implied total of 109 points versus the new-look Boston Celtics, who are now without one of Embiid's toughest challengers, Al Horford, who now starts next to the big man in the Philly lineup.
In Horford's stead, Boston is expected to deploy some combination of Daniel Theis, Enes Kanter and Robert Williams. Kanter's defensive struggles are well-documented, and he had just a 109 defensive rating a year ago, while Theis gives up four inches and Williams lacks the experience to handle a guy like Embiid. And if that's not bad enough, Embiid averaged 2.4 more points and an additional 3.0 DK points at home a year ago.
Our models have Embiid down for 26.7 points and 56.8 DK points in his season debut.
Kyrie Irving, PG, Brooklyn Nets
DraftKings Price: $8,900
Like Embiid and the Sixers, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets are also favorites on their home court this evening. Hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves, they are giving 4.5, but more importantly, this game has the second-highest total on the slate at 225.5. The combination of the two provides an implied total of 115 points, in which Uncle Drew should be heavily involved given his career 29.2% usage rate.
With the Celtics last year, the six-time All-Star averaged 44.4 DK points on 23.8 points, 6.9 assists and 5.0 rebounds. He converted at a clip of 48.7% on 18.5 shot attempts, all in 33.0 minutes a night.
On opening night in Brooklyn, our models are more bullish on Irving, expecting him to make a statement with his new squad. Over 36.7 minutes, we expect him to turn 21.9 shot attempts into 30.4 points and 51.0 DraftKings points in total. At his price, that's good enough for a return of 5.73 points per dollar.
Devin Booker, PG/SG, Phoenix Suns
DraftKings Price: $8,700
If you're looking to build up your backcourt further, or just lock in a different guard at a similar price, Devin Booker is in a prime spot against the Sacramento Kings. Last year, the Kings and Suns ranked 5th and 12th in pace, respectively, according to Basketball Reference, having allowed 111.5 and 115.1 points per 100 possessions (115.3 and 116.8 per game, respectively).
It would be a shock if this isn't a high-scoring affair in Phoenix and oddsmakers agree. FanDuel Sportsbook has laid out a 232.5 over/under that trumps every other game by seven-plus points. And a 1.5-point line in Sacramento's favor should only do more to potentially push this one past the set total. It should stay close throughout, which bodes well for Booker's minutes and workload.
Tonight, we project the fifth-year pro to log 36.6 minutes. In the 36 games Booker played at least 36 minutes last year, he averaged 48.8 DK points with nine double-doubles and four games of 40-plus points on the court. He comes with 60-plus upside and a floor of about 35. We have him projected in the middle at 44.2 DK points on the night.
