Brad Miller, Nate Karns headline six-player trade between Mariners, Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired shortstop Brad Miller, first baseman/outfielder Logan Morrison and pitcher Danny Farquhar from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Nate Karns, pitcher C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league outfielder Boog Powell.

What It Means:

The first trade of the offseason is a good one, with six players changing teams. Miller is the most interesting player headed to Tampa Bay, as the 26-year-old hit .258/.329/.402 with 11 homers and 13 steals last season. Miller played five different positions for Seattle in 2015, and the Rays, who got a lot of mileage out of Ben Zobrist in a utility role, will likely deploy Miller in a similar fashion.

As for what the Mariners are receiving Karns posted a 3.90 xFIP in 147 innings with the Rays in 2015. Riefenhauser is a 25-year-old reliever who, in 14 2/3 innings with the Rays in 2015, had a 5.93 xFIP. Powell, 22, split his season between Double-A and Triple-A. He hit to the tune of a .341 wOBA in 246 plate appearances at Triple-A.
