Giants' Madison Bumgarner (finger) dominates in rehab start on Saturday

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner (finger) struck out eight batters across 3 2/3 hitless innings in his first rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

What It Means:

Bumgarner allowed just one baserunner (on a walk) as he threw 47 pitches, also singling in his only plate appearance. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said earlier this month that he expected Bumgarner to make at least three rehab starts, but Bumgarner thinks he could return sooner if necessary. "I obviously didn't know before today, but judging off the way I felt out there, I think so for sure," Bumgarner said. Whether the Giants consider moving up his timetable remains to be seen.

Our models project Bumgarner for a 6-8 record the rest of the way, with a 4.77 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 20.5 percent strikeout rate in 120 2/3 more innings pitched in 2018.
