Mallex Smith covering center field, batting at bottom of Rays' order on Monday
Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Mallex Smith is batting ninth on Monday against the Texas Rangers.
What It Means:
Smith will start in center field in place of Kevin Kiermaier, who will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb and is expected to miss 8-12 weeks. The 24-year-old will also bat ninth versus Rangers southpaw Martin Perez.
