Blue Jays' Brett Cecil (calf) tosses lightly prior to Game 5
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Brett Cecil (calf) was throwing in the outfield prior to Game 5 of the American League Division Series.
Cecil was injured in Game 2, tearing his calf muscle, but was already back on the field before Wednesday's Game 5. This was surprising even to manager John Gibbons who said, "I couldn’t believe it when they said he was going to throw today."
Cecil isn't expected to return until the World Series - if the the Blue Jays make it there - but it's a promising sign. Cecil has been a vital piece to the Jays' bullpen, posting a 2.39 xFIP this season, sixth best among relievers. He also had 11.60 strikeouts per nine innings, 13th best among relievers.
