Orioles' Kevin Gausman cuts eye during collision at plate
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Kevin Gausman suffered a cut near his left eye in a collision with Detroit Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario on Monday.
The two collided while Gausman was covering home plate on a play in the second inning where Candelario was in the on-deck circle. The right-hander believes the brim of the third baseman's helmet caused the cut. Gausman admitted to some soreness in his back, but it sounds like he avoided a major injury.
Gausman twirled a 4.68 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and 21.9 strikeout percentage across 186 2/3 innings last season while going 11-12 in 34 starts.
