Red Sox ink J.D. Martinez to five-year, $110 million deal

The Boston Red Sox have signed free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez to a five-year, $110 million deal.

What It Means:

ESPN's Pedro Gomez was the first to report that a deal was done. The details followed, including opt-outs after the second and third years of the deal. Martinez will make $50 million in the first two and $72 million over the first three. It took much longer, but the Red Sox finally nailed their guy to compete with the likes of the New York Yankees' bombers. He'll likely spend most of his time at designated hitter, with Hanley Ramirez moving to first.

Last year, Martinez slashed .303/.376/.690 in 119 games between the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
